Crafting Memories: Section 3 of the Memories Blanket CAL

Can you believe it?  We are already on Section 3 of the Memories Blanket CAL!

Watch the live video where Deb and I discuss Section 3 and give you helpful tips and tricks:

The third square:

If you haven't done it already, make sure you grab the link to the third square of the week, the Rustic Square. You'll need to complete your second 8-square strip to continue with the Section 3 pattern. Click the picture below to get this pattern:

The Rustic Square picture

If you have already completed your 8 square strip- then, it's time to focus on putting an edge on your squares, attaching it to Section 2 (instructions provided below in the pattern), and moving on to Section 3.

I think you're going to love Section 3. Seriously, this section up against the row of Rustic squares is my favorite part of the blanket. It gives me boho, comfy pajama vibes. It starts out with a fun gingham pattern that gives you an opportunity to pull in some of your staple colors, and it finishes up with the Spike Stitch. Both of them use simple stitches like the double crochets and single crochets.

A couple things to watch out for are: you will be carrying your work along with the gingham portion, so there will be multiple color changes, and the Spike Stitch section uses a long single crochet method that works around the complete body of single crochet rows before. You don't have to try and work around stitch posts or special loops, you just go right into the indicated hole and complete your single crochet by pulling your loop up until it reaches the row you're currently on. It's a pretty satisfying stitch when you get into it. :)

 Let's talk colors!

For this section, I wanted to go off of the beaten "plaid" path and use colors that aren't seen together a lot. I felt like I had enough of the browns in my blanket at this point, so I leaned on my greens to do the gingham section. Contrasting Color 1 (CC1) is Light Sage, Contrasting Color 2 (CC2) is the Dark Olive, and Contrasting Color 3 (CC3) is Sungold.

The secret about working plaids or ginghams is to have two colors in the same family (ligh green/dark green or light red/dark red) and have those be the first two colors you work with. Then you can choose a third color (like black, white, or in my case, yellow) that will work well as that pop of color that turns your first two into a plaid/gingham. If you are looking to get a Buffalo plaid look- the traditional colors, according to the experts, is black and red. Anything else is considered a gingham.

Contrasting Color 4 (CC4) is Cranberry the final Contrasting Color 5 (CC5) is Brown. I put the Main Color between the Cranberry and Brown to keep it from being too dark and moody, but it was definitely time to make the red stand out and these colors make me think of chocolate covered cherries. Yum.

Have fun with your colors! Don't let the fear of putting the "wrong" colors next to each other hold you back...they are all part of the same rainbow!

Note: Before we get started on Section 3, we need to put an edge on the top and bottom of our Rustic Square strip.

Rustic Square Edges- Instructions are the same for the top & bottom edges working lengthwise and RS facing you.

Top/Bottom: Using MC, starting on the far right side, attach to the first sc after the ch-1 sp with a St Sc, sc in the next 16 sc, (sk the ch-1 spaces and join sp between the squares- sc in the next 17 st)  6 times, sk the ch-1 spaces and join sp between the squares, sc in the first 10 st, sc dec, sc in the remaining 5 st, finish off. (134 sc, 1 sc dec)

NOW- we need to join our previous Section 2 to our Rustic Squares strip.

To join the next square strip to the last section: (RS) of both pieces facing you. Whipstich through the top two loops of the Section and (coming from behind the stitch) around the post of the corresponding sc from the Strip above. This method will make the Strip look like you used a back post stitch.

picture shows first step of attaching.
Go through both loops from the front of the stitches from the Section.

picture shows the third step of attaching
Put the needle from back to front around the post of the corresponding stitch from the Square border.
Repeat this until your pieces have been joined. Cut off and sew in your ends.
