My Little Newborn Knit Hat Pattern

My Little Newborn Knit Hat Pattern

The pattern includes instructions for both baby weight and worsted weight yarns, as well as instructions for both dpn’s and straight needles.

Materials:

1 oz/ 50-60 yds baby weight yarn (used Bernat Baby and Jamie)
1 oz/ 50-60 yds worsted weight (used Caron Simply Soft Party)
Size 4 dpn’s or straights for baby weight
Size 6 dpn’s or straights for worsted weight

Yarn needle for sewing ends or seaming
Stitch markers (optional)

Gauge: (baby wt/size 4dpns)- in Stockinette 13 rows x 10 stitches = 2” x 2”
(worsted/size 6dpns)- in Stockinette 12 rows x 9 stitches = 2” x 2”

Pattern: Baby Weight, Size 4 DPN’s

CO 72, separate onto three needles (24 per needle) making sure not to twist

K2p2 ribbing for 5 rows

Knit 7 rows in Main Color (MC)

Knit 3 rows in Stripe Color (if you are not striping, omit the change of colors, Knit till 4” from beginning)

Cut stripe and continue with MC, Knit for 4” from beginning

Decrease begins:

Row 1: (k6, k2tog) repeat
Row 2 and all even rows: knit
Row 3: (k5, k2tog) repeat
Row 5: (k4, k2tog) repeat
Row 7: (k3, k2tog) repeat
Row 9: (k2, k2tog) repeat
Row 11: (k1, k2tog) repeat
Row 13: (k2tog) repeat 
End after row 13. Cut leaving a long end for sewing the top closed. Weave your end through the loops still on your needle and pull snug. Secure your end and cut.

Pattern: Baby Weight, Size 4 Straight Needles

CO 72, k2p2 for 5 rows

**If striping** St st for 6 rows, drop Main Color, Pick up Stripe Color and St st for 4 rows, Cut Stripe Color, Pick up Main Color and knit until the hat is 4” from the beginning, ending with a purl row.

**If not striping** St st until your hat measures 4” from the beginning, ending with a purl row.

Decrease begins:
Row 1: (k5, k2tog) repeat to last 2, k last 2 (10 decreases)
Row 2 and all even rows: Purl
Row 3: (k4, k2tog) repeat to last 2, k last 2 
Row 5: (k3, k2tog) repeat to last 2, k last 2
Row 7: (k2, k2tog) repeat to last 2, k last 2
Row 9: (k1, k2tog) repeat to last 2, k last 2
Row 11: (k2tog) repeat
Row 12: Purl

Cut leaving a long end for sewing the top closed. Weave your end through the loops still on your needle and pull snug. Stitch side of hat closed (I used a mattress stitch). Secure your end and cut.


Pattern: Worsted Weight, Size 6 DPN’s

CO 60, separate on to three needles (20 stitches on each) making sure not to twist

K2p2 for 4 rows

Knit until hat measures 4” (if you are in gauge, that should be about 19 rows. Feel free to stripe with like-weight yarn.)


Decrease Begins:

Row 1: (k4, k2tog) repeat

Row 2 and all even rows: knit

Row 3: (k3, k2tog) repeat

Row 5: (k2, k2tog) repeat

Row 7: (k1, k2tog) repeat

Row 9: (k2tog)

Finish off after Row 9. Cut leaving a long end for sewing the top closed. Weave your end through the loops still on your needle and pull snug. Secure your end and cut.



Pattern: Worsted Weight, Size 6 Straight Needles

CO 60, k2p2 for 4 rows

St St until hat reaches 4” from beginning

Decrease Begins:

Row 1: (k4, k2tog) repeat

Row 2 and all even rows: Purl

Row 3: (k3, k2tog) repeat

Row 5: (k2, k2tog) repeat

Row 7: (k1, k2tog) repeat

Row 9: (k2tog)

Row 10: Purl

Finish off after Row 10. Cut leaving a long end for sewing the top closed. Weave your end through the loops still on your needle and pull snug. Sew a seam along the side of your hat. (Mattress stitch works best). Secure your end and cut.
